In a video statement released on Thursday, November 5, Hegseth defended the Iran war as a historic military campaign intended to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Hegseth Rejects Impeachment Threats From Congress Hegseth dismissed impeachment efforts as politically motivated and defended his leadership of the Pentagon. He highlighted the removal of senior military officials, the termination of diversity programmes and restrictions on transgender military personnel as examples of his administration's policy changes. Republican Representative Thomas Massie announced plans to reintroduce articles of impeachment against Hegseth next week. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries also questioned why Hegseth remained in office. However, reports indicate that Hegseth's position remains under discussion within the administration. Vice President JD Vance has publicly questioned whether the Iran war justified its political consequences, linking the conflict to Republican losses in Congress. Hegseth maintained that the military campaign remained necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Pentagon Seeks $1.5 Trillion Defence Budget Hegseth urged lawmakers to support a $1.5 trillion defence spending package to finance military operations and modernisation. Republican Senator Thom Tillis warned that Hegseth's strained congressional relationships could complicate approval. Democrats have pledged investigations into the Iran war, dismissals of senior military leaders, US policy towards Ukraine and strikes on suspected drug-trafficking vessels in Latin American waters. Representative Adam Smith, expected to lead the House Armed Services Committee, has promised stronger congressional oversight when Democrats assume control in January 2027.
