The opposition DMK has questioned the urgency behind Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s decision to provide official vehicles and additional allowances to all MLAs, arguing that the state faces more pressing public issues that require immediate attention. DMK Questions Vijay’s MLA Vehicle Scheme DMK organising secretary R.S. Bharathi criticised the announcement, asking why the government considered vehicles for legislators an urgent priority. He argued that Tamil Nadu was dealing with several serious issues affecting ordinary citizens and said the government could have postponed the expenditure. The criticism came after Vijay announced in the Assembly that all MLAs would receive government vehicles to help them travel within their constituencies and address public grievances. Tamil Nadu MLAs to Get ₹1 Lakh Monthly Support Under the announced scheme, MLAs will receive ₹75,000 per month towards driver salaries, fuel and vehicle maintenance. They will also receive ₹25,000 per month to hire a secretary for official constituency work, taking the additional monthly support to ₹1 lakh per legislator. The government has argued that the assistance is particularly important for first-time MLAs and representatives from modest financial backgrounds who may struggle with the costs of regular constituency travel. Vijay Defends Cars for Tamil Nadu MLAs Vijay said legislators need to travel frequently to meet constituents, oversee public works and address grievances, arguing that government-provided logistical support would improve governance. The proposal followed requests from legislators seeking greater logistical assistance for constituency work. While the DMK has raised concerns over the financial burden, some opposition and allied-party representatives have supported the idea, arguing that adequate transport is necessary for MLAs to perform their duties effectively.
