India’s ambitious IndiaAI Mission has taken a significant step forward by successfully deploying over 17,300 GPUs, a crucial component in building the nation’s artificial intelligence infrastructure. The GPUs are part of a broader ₹10,371 crore public-private partnership aimed at democratizing access to cutting-edge computing power for Indian startups, researchers, and academic institutions. Massive GPU Rollout Underway The project, structured in multiple phases, has so far received proposals amounting to a total of 34,333 GPUs. Out of these, more than 17,300 have already been installed and made operational. Major cloud service providers such as Yotta Data Services, NextGen, and E2E Networks have fully integrated their deployments with the IndiaAI compute portal. Two other providers—Jio Platforms and CtrlS Datacenters—are expected to complete their installations by August 7, within the six-month period specified in their agreements. The installation of these GPUs brings India one step closer to providing scalable, low-cost, and high-quality AI compute resources to innovators across the country. Enabling Access to High-End Compute Power The IndiaAI Mission aims to address a fundamental challenge faced by AI researchers and startups in India: lack of access to expensive and powerful computing infrastructure. By creating a shared public cloud compute platform, the government is ensuring that even small players in the ecosystem have access to GPUs like the Nvidia H100/H200 and AMD MI300X, often at significantly reduced rates. The second round of bidding saw a 40% reduction in pricing compared to global standards, enhancing affordability and ensuring more inclusive participation across sectors. Strategic Benefits to the Indian AI Landscape The infrastructure is already being tapped by emerging AI startups such as Sarvam AI, which are using thousands of GPUs to develop Indian-language foundation models. The mission supports broader strategic goals of building indigenous large language models, improving digital public infrastructure, and asserting India’s presence in the global AI arena. This GPU deployment effort also aligns with India’s long-term vision of fostering an AI-ready workforce and reducing dependency on foreign compute infrastructure, contributing to national digital sovereignty.
