Delhi Police protest crackdown case

The Supreme Court of India is scheduled to hear multiple petitions on Thursday, October 15, 2026, concerning alleged police excesses during recent Delhi protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The proceedings also include Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's challenge to the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Supreme Court Hears Delhi Protest Crackdown Petitions A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was scheduled to take up the matters at 10:30 am. The petitions concern allegations of unlawful detention, excessive police force, harassment of journalists and restrictions on public transportation during demonstrations held between October 10 and 12. Several organisations representing lawyers and journalists have sought judicial intervention, alleging that police personnel obstructed their professional duties. The allegations remain subject to judicial examination. Delhi Police Face Contempt Plea Over Metro Restrictions The Supreme Court had previously directed authorities to regulate Metro and railway services without imposing blanket restrictions that unnecessarily affected public movement. A contempt petition subsequently alleged that authorities failed to comply with those directions. On October 11, the Court issued notice after identifying a prima facie case of non-compliance. Separate petitions have challenged internet restrictions, the detention of protesters and Section 172 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Rahul Gandhi Challenges Election Commission's SIR Rahul Gandhi and nine other INDIA bloc leaders have challenged the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The opposition leaders have sought disclosure of election-related documents and an independent audit mechanism, citing alleged irregularities in voter-list revisions and deletions. Additional petitions question restrictions imposed around Jantar Mantar and alleged disruptions at the Supreme Court premises during the opposition's October 12 march. The hearings will examine constitutional questions concerning electoral administration, police powers, freedom of assembly and access to justice.
