The Supreme Court on Friday raised concern over the presence of lawyers with allegedly doubtful degrees and said the Central Bureau of Investigation should ideally examine the issue. Supreme Court On Fake Lawyers A Bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi made the observation while hearing a petition linked to the implementation of senior advocate designation guidelines by the Delhi High Court. The Court flagged the wider concern of people allegedly practising law despite questions over their educational qualifications. The CJI observed that the issue involved many individuals wearing black robes despite serious doubts about their degrees. CBI Probe Into Doubtful Degrees The Supreme Court said the CBI should look into the issue of allegedly fraudulent lawyers. The remarks indicate the Court’s concern over the credibility of the legal profession and the need for proper verification of legal qualifications. The issue of fake degrees and unqualified legal practitioners has been debated in the past, with concerns that such individuals can damage public trust in the justice delivery system. Senior Advocate Designation Plea Withdrawn The remarks came during the hearing of a contempt petition filed over the alleged delay in implementing Supreme Court guidelines on senior advocate designation by the Delhi High Court. The Court, however, refused to entertain the plea and also objected to the language reportedly used by the petitioner, advocate Sanjay Dubey, on social media. After the Court’s strong remarks, the petitioner withdrew the plea.
