The Congress has demanded Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s resignation over a controversy linked to casualties during Operation Sindoor, alleging that Parliament was misled. The government has rejected the charge, saying the minister’s remarks were being viewed without full context. Operation Sindoor Deaths Controversy The controversy began after the names of six Indian military personnel killed during Operation Sindoor were inscribed at the National War Memorial. The operation was carried out in May 2025 after the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 civilians were killed. Congress leaders claimed that the public disclosure of the names raised questions about earlier statements made in Parliament. The party alleged that the Defence Minister had said no Indian soldiers were lost during the operation and demanded accountability from the government. Congress Seeks Rajnath Singh Resignation The Congress said giving incorrect information to Parliament would be a serious matter and argued that Rajnath Singh should step down. Party leaders also accused the government of delaying full public recognition of the six personnel who died in the line of duty. The opposition has sought clarity on why the names were made public more than a year after the operation. It has also questioned whether the government had provided complete information about the military casualties earlier. Defence Ministry Rejects Allegations The Defence Ministry has denied that information about the deaths was hidden. It said the then Director General of Military Operations had paid tribute to the fallen personnel during an official briefing on May 11, 2025. The ministry also said some of the personnel had received gallantry honours and that the process of inscribing names at the National War Memorial follows established protocol. It maintained that Rajnath Singh’s Parliament remarks must be understood in their proper context.
