India summoned Ukraine’s Ambassador Oleksandr Polishchuk to register a strong protest over an attack on a commercial vessel in the Black Sea that resulted in the death of an Indian seafarer. New Delhi condemned attacks on civilian shipping and raised concerns about the safety of sailors operating in conflict-affected waters. India Protests Black Sea Ship Attack The commercial vessel MV OMORFI was attacked while travelling through the Black Sea. Three Indian nationals were reportedly among the ship’s crew. One Indian seafarer was killed in the incident, while the other two Indian crew members were reported safe. Indian officials conveyed serious concern over the attack and asked the Ukrainian envoy to communicate New Delhi’s position to authorities in Kyiv. India maintained that attacks endangering civilian sailors and commercial shipping were unacceptable. Separate Vessel Carried Four Indians The diplomatic action followed growing concern over multiple attacks involving commercial ships carrying Indian nationals in the Black Sea region. A separate vessel, MV AGN Ragnar, reportedly had four Indian nationals aboard when it was struck while docked near Ukraine’s Odesa port. Two Indian crew members were confirmed safe, while information regarding the condition of the remaining two was awaited. The incidents have highlighted the dangers faced by Indian sailors employed aboard vessels travelling through active conflict zones. Black Sea Shipping Risks Increase Maritime security concerns have increased as commercial ships operating near Russia and Ukraine face the risk of missile and drone attacks. India has repeatedly called for the protection of civilian lives, commercial vessels and freedom of navigation. The government is also monitoring the condition of affected Indian crew members and maintaining contact with relevant authorities. Indian seafarers have been advised to carefully assess security conditions before accepting assignments on ships operating in conflict-affected areas.
