What the Aftermath of the CJP Protest Has Exposed The CJP protest may have ended on the streets, but the questions it has raised cannot be allowed to disappear with the crowd. The immediate focus may now be on FIRs, arrests, political statements and the conduct of individual protesters, but the larger issue is far more serious. What India witnessed was not merely another agitation over a grievance. It was a demonstration of how quickly protest can be converted into pressure, how easily abuse can be dressed up as dissent and how effectively chaos can be used to blackmail the establishment. The original issue behind any protest deserves to be examined on its merits. Governments must be questioned, institutions must remain accountable and citizens must retain the right to oppose decisions they consider unjust. But the legitimacy of a cause cannot automatically legitimise every method adopted in its name. Once a protest descends into intimidation, abusive rhetoric, disruption and an attempt to overwhelm institutions through sheer pressure, the debate can no longer remain limited to the original demand. That is the uncomfortable lesson from the aftermath of the CJP protest. A section of the political left increasingly behaves as though volume itself creates legitimacy. Shout loudly enough, occupy enough public space, provoke enough confrontation and the establishment will eventually retreat. Once the government begins worrying more about optics than law, political blackmail becomes an effective strategy. The problem is made worse by the silence of everyone else. The political right and the broad centre may represent millions of citizens who reject anarchy, abuse and mob pressure, but they often remain hesitant, defensive and fragmented. They watch while a loud political minority claims ownership over dissent, morality, youth, civil society and even democracy itself. That silence must end. Protest Is a Democratic Right—Anarchy Is Not Peaceful protest is an essential democratic right. Citizens must be free to question authority, criticise ministers, challenge laws and organise public demonstrations. A government that cannot tolerate peaceful dissent is not secure in its own democratic legitimacy. But democracy does not require the public to accept anarchy as protest. No constitutional right grants anyone the freedom to threaten institutions, abuse individuals, obstruct ordinary citizens indefinitely or create a climate of intimidation. A protester does not become immune from ordinary standards of conduct merely because the protest is politically fashionable. Anger does not erase responsibility, and a slogan does not override the law. The left has become remarkably effective at blurring this distinction. When disorder is created, it is called resistance. When abusive language is used, it is called frustration. When institutions enforce the law, it is called repression. By constantly shifting the moral burden onto the state, aggressive protesters are able to portray themselves as victims even when they are responsible for escalation. This manipulation must be rejected. Refusing to tolerate disorder is not authoritarianism. It is the basic duty of a constitutional government. Peaceful dissent deserves protection. Anarchy deserves consequences. The Politics of Abuse Has Been Normalised One of the most disturbing features of recent protest politics is the normalisation of abuse. Personal insults, obscene language, humiliation of officials and open contempt for institutions are increasingly presented as symbols of courage. The more vulgar the outburst, the more it is celebrated as fearless resistance. Social media then amplifies the performance, converts the individual into a temporary hero and rewards behaviour that would be considered unacceptable in any other setting. This is not political bravery. It is the collapse of political standards. A crowd can create a dangerous illusion of immunity. Surrounded by applause, slogans and cameras, individuals begin to believe that the collective will protect them from consequences. They say things they would not dare to say alone and cross boundaries they would otherwise recognise. But the crowd eventually disperses. The cameras move on. The legal consequences, however, remain individual. Young people in particular must understand this reality. Participation in a cause does not suspend personal responsibility. A cheering crowd may encourage the offence, but it will not share the FIR. A political leader may praise the defiance, but will rarely share the punishment. Abuse is not resistance. Vulgarity is not courage. Intimidation is not argument. Create Chaos, Claim Victimhood, Demand Surrender The playbook has now become familiar. First, the protest is escalated. Roads are blocked, institutions are surrounded, rhetoric becomes inflammatory and confrontation is deliberately invited. Then, when law enforcement responds, the same movement presents itself as the victim of a brutal state. Political allies amplify the allegation. Friendly commentators ignore the provocation and focus only on the response. Television channels repeatedly broadcast the most dramatic visuals until a limited agitation begins to resemble a national uprising. The final stage is pressure on the establishment to surrender. Withdraw the cases. Release everyone. Suspend enforcement. Accept the demands. Apologise for maintaining order. This is political blackmail, not democratic negotiation. The message being sent to every future pressure group is deeply dangerous: peaceful representation may be ignored, but disruption will be rewarded. If governments repeatedly retreat whenever a protest generates sufficient noise, why would anyone remain peaceful? Why submit memoranda, approach courts or participate in structured dialogue when chaos produces faster results? Every surrender under mob pressure creates the next mob. The Left Does Not Speak for All of India The left has perfected the art of presenting itself as the natural voice of every supposedly marginalised or dissatisfied section of society. It claims to speak for students, women, workers, minorities, farmers, the poor and the young. The assumption is rarely questioned because those who disagree are often reluctant to enter the argument. But the left does not speak for all of India. Millions of students reject abusive agitation. Millions of young people want accountability without chaos. Millions of women want justice without political exploitation. Millions of ordinary citizens may disagree with government policies while also refusing to endorse threats, vandalism or disorder. These citizens are rarely visible because they are not blocking roads or shouting before television cameras. They are working, studying, raising families, paying taxes and following the law. Their refusal to create disruption should not make their voice less valuable. Street presence is not proof of national consensus. Noise is not numbers. Disruption is not legitimacy. A hundred people capable of generating dramatic footage cannot be treated as more representative than the millions who chose not to participate. Democracy cannot be reduced to the politics of whoever occupies the most space or produces the loudest slogan. The Silence of the Right and Centre Has Become Surrender The left’s dominance of the public conversation is not solely the result of its organisation. It is also the result of the timidity of its opponents. The political right and the broad centre routinely allow the left to define the language of debate. They hesitate to defend law enforcement because they fear being called authoritarian. They hesitate to condemn abusive protesters because they fear being called insensitive. They hesitate to speak for ordinary citizens because they fear that doing so will appear politically incorrect. This is no longer caution. It is surrender. When only one ideological side is willing to organise, protest, dominate campuses, shape cultural narratives and aggressively occupy public platforms, institutions begin to mistake that side for society itself. Political leaders then respond not to actual public opinion, but to the intensity of organised pressure. Silence is interpreted as consent. Restraint is mistaken for weakness. Civility is exploited as hesitation. The right and centre must stop apologising for their existence. They have every right to reject the left’s methods, challenge its moral claims and demand that the law be enforced consistently. They do not need permission from activists to defend order. Law-Abiding Citizens Must Stop Apologising for Demanding Order Public order is not a partisan obsession. It is a democratic necessity. Ordinary citizens have the right to travel to work, attend school, operate businesses and use public roads without being trapped by politically manufactured disruption. Their lives do not become less important simply because a group of protesters claims moral superiority. Yet the rights of the peaceful majority are routinely treated as secondary. The inconvenience caused to workers, patients, shopkeepers, commuters and students is dismissed as a minor price for political expression. The assumption appears to be that those who follow the law must always adjust, while those who break it must always be accommodated. Why? Why must a shopkeeper lose income because activists want dramatic television footage? Why must a patient struggle to reach a hospital because a protest has occupied a road? Why must a student miss an examination because political organisers want to display their strength? The right to protest cannot become a licence to erase everyone else’s rights. Demanding order is not an attack on democracy. It is a defence of the citizens whom protest politics frequently ignores. Governments Must Stop Rewarding Mob Pressure Governments across party lines often make the same mistake. They believe that retreating will calm the situation. In reality, retreating merely proves that escalation works. When cases are withdrawn under pressure, future protesters learn that the law is negotiable. When abusive conduct is excused because the cause is politically sensitive, future activists learn that ideology can provide immunity. When unlawful disruption leads to concessions, every political dispute becomes a potential street confrontation. The state must establish a clear and predictable principle. Peaceful protest will be facilitated and protected. Legitimate grievances will be heard. But threats, vandalism, assault, sustained obstruction and abuse will invite legal consequences. Those consequences must not depend on ideology. A right-wing mob and a left-wing mob must be treated according to the same law. A government that selectively enforces order only destroys its own credibility. Dialogue is democratic. Negotiation is necessary. But the state cannot negotiate with a hand around its throat. The Media Must Stop Mistaking Spectacle for Public Opinion The media has played a central role in turning disruptive protest into political power. A peaceful gathering is rarely visually dramatic. A confrontation, however, produces endless footage. Angry slogans, barricades, police action and emotional speeches create the spectacle upon which modern news cycles thrive. Activists understand this incentive. The more provocative the behaviour, the greater the coverage. The greater the coverage, the greater the pressure on the establishment. Media amplification therefore becomes part of the protest strategy itself. This does not mean protests should be ignored. It means they must be reported responsibly. Journalists must ask who is participating, what laws have been violated, whether the claims being made are accurate and whether the movement genuinely represents the broader public. A dramatic crowd should not automatically be described as the voice of the nation. The media must report the spectacle, but it must not surrender to it. The Right and Centre Must Organise, Speak and Assert Themselves The answer to the left’s aggressive political methods cannot be censorship or counter-anarchy. It must be democratic organisation. Citizens who reject mob politics must become more vocal in civil society, universities, professional associations, cultural institutions and public debate. They must challenge the claim that only the left cares about justice or accountability. They must support institutions when those institutions act lawfully and question them when they do not. Most importantly, they must stop retreating from the public sphere. The right and centre cannot continue limiting their political participation to elections and occasional social-media outrage. Public narratives are shaped every day. If one ideological group dominates campuses, streets, newsrooms and activist networks, it will continue to project itself as the conscience of the country. The objective is not to silence the left. The objective is to deny it a monopoly over dissent and morality. A democracy requires competing voices. It cannot function when one side shouts and the other side merely watches. India Belongs to the Peaceful Majority Too The aftermath of the CJP protest must become a turning point. India does not belong only to those prepared to create the greatest disturbance. The Constitution does not give a screaming minority the authority to override the rights and preferences of peaceful citizens. It protects dissent, but it does not appoint the mob as the final judge of public policy. The right and centre must therefore stand up—not with violence, not with abuse and not with counter-chaos, but with confidence, organisation and clarity. They must say that protest is acceptable but anarchy is not. Criticism is legitimate but abuse is not. Negotiation is democratic but blackmail is not. Anger may explain misconduct, but it cannot excuse it. For too long, the law-abiding majority has mistaken silence for maturity. That silence has instead allowed the most aggressive voices to claim that they speak for everyone. They do not. Enough is enough. The left does not own India. It does not own dissent, morality, youth or democracy. And it cannot be allowed to bully the country through anarchy, abuse and political blackmail.
