Chinese President Xi Jinping met North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song in Beijing as the two countries marked 65 years since signing their friendship treaty. Xi called for stronger strategic coordination amid growing global and regional uncertainty. Xi Meets North Korean Premier in Beijing Pak travelled to Beijing for events commemorating the 65th anniversary of the China-North Korea Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance. During the meeting, Xi said Beijing and Pyongyang should maintain strategic resolve and continue strengthening their traditionally close relationship. He also called for faster implementation of agreements reached during his recent summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. China-North Korea Cooperation to Expand The two sides discussed expanding cooperation across political, economic and cultural areas while increasing coordination on regional and international issues. China remains North Korea’s most important economic partner and a key source of trade and diplomatic support. Relations between the neighbouring countries have gradually strengthened following disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Diplomatic exchanges and transport connections have also resumed. Friendship Treaty Marks 65 Years The 1961 friendship treaty includes provisions for mutual assistance and remains China’s only active formal mutual defence pact. Xi said China’s commitment to its traditional friendship with North Korea would remain unchanged despite shifts in the international situation. The meeting comes as North Korea deepens military and economic cooperation with Russia while continuing to expand its nuclear and missile capabilities. Beijing is seeking to preserve its influence over Pyongyang and maintain stability on the Korean Peninsula amid rising regional tensions.
