At least 65 workers were injured after two locomotive trains collided inside an under-construction hydropower tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on December 31. The accident occurred during operations linked to a hydropower project when one locomotive reportedly rammed into another inside the narrow tunnel, triggering panic among workers present at the site. Rescue Operations Launched Local authorities and emergency response teams rushed to the site soon after the collision. Injured workers were evacuated from the tunnel and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials said most of the injuries were caused by the sudden impact and overcrowding inside the tunnel at the time of the accident. No fatalities have been reported. Condition of the Injured Medical officials stated that the majority of those injured sustained minor to moderate injuries, including fractures and blunt trauma. A few workers were kept under observation, but their condition was described as stable. Doctors confirmed that none of the injured were in critical condition. Cause of the Accident Under Probe Preliminary assessments suggest a possible communication lapse or braking failure may have led to the collision. The locomotives were being used to transport workers and construction material inside the tunnel. Authorities have ordered a detailed inquiry to determine the exact cause of the accident and to assess whether safety protocols were followed. Safety Concerns Raised The incident has once again raised concerns over worker safety at large infrastructure and hydropower projects in the fragile Himalayan region. Officials said safety audits will be carried out at the project site and corrective measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
