Spain has reinforced the border of its North African enclave of Ceuta after an unprecedented migrant surge from Morocco, while claims that Moroccan authorities deliberately directed people towards Spanish territory remain unverified. Ceuta Migrant Surge Overwhelms Spanish Enclave Between 50,000 and 60,000 people entered Ceuta over two days by crossing the land border, swimming around barriers or reaching Spanish-controlled beaches. The influx placed enormous pressure on the enclave, which has a population of about 84,000. At least 67 people reportedly died during the crossings, primarily from drowning or being crushed amid the crowds. Reception facilities were overwhelmed, while shops closed and additional Spanish security personnel were deployed. More than 48,000 migrants subsequently returned to Morocco voluntarily or through coordinated border procedures. Morocco Border Claims Remain Unverified Some migrants claimed Moroccan security personnel initially allowed them to proceed towards Ceuta or told them to continue in that direction. Videos also appeared to show limited intervention during the early stages of the surge. However, no verified evidence has established that Morocco organised or deliberately facilitated the crossings. Moroccan forces later helped restore border controls and assisted with the return of migrants. Spanish authorities attributed the surge mainly to trafficking networks, viral social media messages and misinformation about immigration rules. False claims suggested that reaching Ceuta would provide easy access to mainland Europe. Spain Installs Floating Ceuta Border Barrier Spain has installed a 500-metre floating barrier near the Tarajal breakwater to prevent further sea crossings. Security forces remain deployed along the border despite a calmer situation. Ceuta is part of Spain but operates external border checks that prevent irregular entrants from automatically travelling into mainland Europe or the wider Schengen area. The crisis has prompted several European governments to demand stronger EU action on irregular migration and external border security.
