Every generation has its icons. Yesterday they were film stars whose posters adorned bedroom walls. Today they are actors, YouTubers, stand-up comedians, Instagram influencers and social media personalities whose opinions travel faster than newspapers, television debates or parliamentary speeches. For millions of young Indians, a post from a favourite celebrity often carries more weight than a press conference by a Cabinet minister or a report written by subject experts. That is the extraordinary power of influence in the digital age. The recent wave of celebrity endorsements surrounding the CJP protests has once again brought this phenomenon into sharp focus. Within hours, numerous actors, comedians, musicians and online creators publicly voiced support for the movement. Whether every one of them arrived at that position independently or whether there was organised outreach behind the scenes is a question that only those involved can answer. There is nothing unconstitutional about celebrities supporting a cause they genuinely believe in. Like every citizen, they enjoy the freedom to express political opinions. However, the episode raises a much bigger question than the protests themselves. Should India's youth allow celebrities to shape their political opinions simply because those celebrities are famous? Should the popularity earned through films, comedy, cricket or viral videos automatically translate into credibility on public policy, governance or constitutional issues? More importantly, should young Indians place blind faith in people whose profession increasingly revolves around monetising their influence? This is not an argument against free speech. It is an argument in favour of independent thought. The real danger does not lie in celebrities speaking. The danger lies in citizens believing that fame itself is evidence of wisdom. Celebrity Influence Has Become a Commercial Industry Modern celebrity culture is built around monetisation. Social media has transformed influence into a product that can be bought, sold and measured. Actors endorse smartphones. Influencers promote financial apps. YouTubers advertise investment platforms. Comedians market food delivery services. Cricketers launch fantasy gaming applications. Every like, share and follower has become part of an enormous commercial ecosystem. There is absolutely nothing unethical about this. Endorsements are a legitimate profession. Advertising has existed for decades, and brands naturally pay personalities who can reach large audiences. The relationship is transparent. A company pays for visibility, and the celebrity provides it. The same applies to personalised celebrity engagement platforms. Today, members of the public can pay celebrities to record birthday greetings, anniversary wishes, motivational messages or promotional videos. What once required personal access now requires only a payment and a script. These services are marketed openly because they are perfectly legal. This reality should not make us cynical about celebrities. It should simply remind us that influence has become a business. When influence itself is commercial, audiences should naturally exercise greater caution before treating every public statement as an expression of deeply held personal conviction. Political Messaging Is Increasingly Using the Same Marketing Model Politics has changed dramatically over the past decade. Campaigns no longer depend only on rallies, manifestos or newspaper advertisements. Political communication now resembles corporate brand marketing. Professional strategists analyse audience behaviour, identify influential voices and design coordinated communication campaigns. Public relations firms, digital agencies, talent managers and social media consultants have become as important to political messaging as speechwriters once were. Celebrities occupy a central place in this ecosystem because they provide something that no policy document can: instant emotional connection. A single Instagram story from a well-known actor can reach millions within minutes. A YouTuber's opinion video can shape discussions across campuses far more effectively than a lengthy academic paper. None of this automatically means celebrities are being paid to support every cause. Many undoubtedly speak out because they sincerely believe in the issue. Others may respond to requests from friends or fellow public figures. Some may simply wish to avoid criticism for remaining silent. The point is not to question motives without evidence. The point is to recognise that modern political campaigns increasingly understand the commercial mechanics of influence and know precisely how to harness them. Being Famous Does Not Make Someone an Authority One of the greatest mistakes young people can make is confusing popularity with expertise. A brilliant actor is not automatically an expert on education policy. A successful comedian is not necessarily qualified to interpret constitutional law. A cricket legend does not become an economist by virtue of winning World Cups. Likewise, an engineer or economist should not expect unquestioning trust when discussing cinema merely because they excel in their own profession. Expertise matters because complex public issues demand careful understanding. Educational reforms involve legal frameworks, administrative procedures, institutional accountability and competing policy objectives. These subjects deserve informed debate, not popularity contests. Yet social media often rewards exactly the opposite behaviour. The person with the largest following frequently becomes the loudest voice regardless of whether they possess any specialised knowledge. Fame creates visibility, but visibility should never be mistaken for credibility. Young Indians should admire celebrities for entertaining, inspiring or motivating them. They should not surrender their critical thinking simply because the message comes from someone with millions of followers. Young Indians Must Learn to Ask Better Questions Perhaps the greatest strength of a democracy is not that everyone has an opinion. It is that citizens are free to question every opinion. Whenever a celebrity publicly supports a movement, young people should resist the temptation to immediately choose sides. Instead, they should ask difficult questions. What exactly is the movement demanding? Who are its organisers? What evidence supports their claims? What is the government's position? What do independent experts say? Are courts already examining the issue? Are there legal complexities that viral posts conveniently ignore? Has the celebrity explained their reasoning in detail, or merely repeated a slogan? These questions are not signs of cynicism. They are signs of responsible citizenship. The health of a democracy depends not on how many celebrities speak but on how many citizens think independently. Social Media Rewards Emotion, Not Accuracy Digital platforms were never designed to reward nuance. They reward engagement. Content that provokes outrage, sympathy or excitement spreads faster than detailed explanations. Emotional videos outperform technical reports. Viral hashtags travel farther than carefully researched policy documents. Celebrities naturally thrive in this environment because they already command attention. Their posts receive immediate amplification, often regardless of whether the underlying information has been thoroughly examined. Young audiences therefore face a unique challenge. They are consuming political content on platforms optimised for emotion rather than verification. Algorithms do not distinguish between expertise and popularity. They simply reward content that keeps users engaged. That is precisely why independent thinking has become more important than ever before. Independent Thinking Is the Real Duty of a Citizen The framers of India's Constitution did not imagine a democracy where citizens outsourced their judgment to celebrities. They envisioned an informed electorate capable of evaluating competing arguments through reason and evidence. This principle applies equally to governments, opposition parties, activists and celebrities. None deserves blind loyalty. Every claim should withstand scrutiny. The ability to disagree respectfully, verify information independently and reach one's own conclusions remains the foundation of democratic citizenship. If young Indians abandon that responsibility in favour of simply following famous personalities, democracy gradually transforms into a popularity contest where influence outweighs substance. That would be a tragedy not because celebrities are speaking, but because citizens have stopped thinking. The Bigger Question Is Not What Celebrities Think The debate surrounding the CJP protests will eventually fade. Another issue will dominate headlines. Another movement will trend online. Another group of celebrities will publicly support or oppose the next national controversy. The larger lesson, however, will remain. India's youth should never decide their political beliefs because an actor, influencer or YouTuber posted a graphic on Instagram or uploaded an emotional video. They should decide after examining evidence, hearing multiple perspectives and forming their own conclusions. Celebrities have every right to participate in public discourse. Their voices enrich democracy just as every citizen's voice does. But democracy functions best when famous opinions are treated as starting points for discussion rather than final verdicts. Respect celebrities for their talent. Appreciate them for their contributions to entertainment, sport or culture. But when it comes to shaping your political beliefs, remember that follower counts are not qualifications, popularity is not expertise and influence is never a substitute for independent thought.
