In a bold move, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy called on Congress party members to undertake a comprehensive caste census by November 30, describing it as a "war" against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies. The chief minister emphasized the need to fulfill the promise made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to carry out a caste census, asserting that any deviation would not be tolerated. Following a Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) resolution, Revanth Reddy demanded that the central government incorporate an OBC caste census in the upcoming 2025 decennial census. During a meeting with state ministers, MPs, MLAs, and other officials, he highlighted the importance of compiling socioeconomic, educational, employment, political, and caste-based data to facilitate policies rooted in social justice. Telangana's Caste Census as a National Model The TPCC passed a formal resolution urging the Centre to implement an OBC caste census as part of the national decennial census, set for 2025. Telangana intends to send a “model document” on caste census to the Centre, proposing it as a framework for a nationwide implementation. The chief minister highlighted that this census would go beyond mere social categorization, providing an in-depth “X-Ray” of health, education, and employment profiles to serve as a foundational database for equitable resource allocation. According to Revanth Reddy, the Congress-led Telangana government aims to allocate resources aligned with social justice principles and shared that the caste census is vital to this vision. Congress Rallies for Social Justice in Telangana Revanth Reddy urged Congress members to take up the mantle of responsibility in coordinating the census process across Telangana's 33 districts. He encouraged the appointment of 33 observers to oversee operations in each district, involving party members at all levels. The chief minister also cited data from the recent Group-I exams to underscore the importance of caste-based representation. Of the 31,383 candidates, 57.11 percent were from backward castes, while only 10 percent were from upper castes, emphasizing the need for better representation of backward communities in government roles. By pressing for a state-led model of caste census, Telangana aims to highlight social equity and push for Rahul Gandhi's broader vision, which Revanth Reddy stated, includes making him a national leader with a focus on inclusive governance.
