Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected US President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for US federal purposes, insisting Canadians will continue using the historic name. The dispute comes amid rapidly worsening trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa. Mark Carney Rejects Trump’s Lake America Rename Carney said the name Lake Ontario has been used for more than 400 years and predates both Canadian Confederation and the US Declaration of Independence. He highlighted its Indigenous origins, noting that “Ontario” derives from a Wendat expression referring to a beautiful or great lake. Carney said that while American policies and naming conventions may change, Canadians would continue calling the shared body of water Lake Ontario “then, now and always.” Trump Signs Lake Ontario Executive Order Trump signed an executive order on August 27 directing the US Interior Department and Board on Geographic Names to change Lake Ontario to “Lake America” in federal government records, maps and documents. The order applies to US federal usage. It does not compel Canada, international organisations, US states or private mapping companies to adopt the new name. Trump linked the decision to his wider dispute with Canada, accusing Ottawa of unfair trade practices and arguing that the lake has significant economic importance to the United States. US-Canada Trade War Fuels Naming Dispute The symbolic confrontation comes as US-Canada trade relations deteriorate sharply. Washington recently imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian imports. Canada subsequently announced retaliatory tariffs on hundreds of American products, with additional measures scheduled to take effect in September. Carney has maintained that Canada is prepared to negotiate with Washington but will resist measures it considers damaging to Canadian economic sovereignty.
