BSNL workforce reduction – Bharat Pulse News

The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-owned telecommunications company, is set to roll out a new Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS 2.0) as part of its strategic plan to reduce workforce size by 35%. This initiative comes in the wake of the government’s broader efforts to revitalize the company and ensure its operational efficiency. Details of the VRS 2.0 The new scheme is expected to target employees nearing retirement and those willing to voluntarily leave the organization with financial benefits. This initiative follows the successful implementation of the first VRS in 2019, which saw over 92,000 employees opting for the scheme, leading to significant cost savings. Officials estimate that VRS 2.0 could result in a reduction of BSNL's workforce by approximately 35%, further decreasing the company’s expenditure on salaries and benefits. Rationale Behind the Scheme BSNL has been grappling with financial challenges in recent years, facing stiff competition from private telecom operators and struggling with outdated infrastructure. Workforce reduction is seen as a critical step to align operational costs with revenue generation. The government has already infused substantial capital into BSNL for infrastructure upgrades and 4G expansion. However, high employee costs remain a significant burden, making workforce optimization a priority for sustainable growth. Government’s Perspective Officials emphasize that the new VRS is designed to be mutually beneficial for both the company and employees. Financial packages will ensure a smooth transition for retiring employees while allowing BSNL to allocate resources more effectively towards technology upgrades and network expansion. Future Outlook for BSNL The implementation of VRS 2.0 is part of a larger restructuring plan aimed at strengthening BSNL’s market position. The company is also gearing up for the rollout of 4G and 5G services to compete with private players, signaling a new phase of modernization and growth. The government remains committed to making BSNL a competitive telecom provider, with the workforce optimization strategy being a pivotal element in this transformation.
