Brazil presidential election – Bharat Pulse News

Brazil’s presidential election is heading to a second-round runoff after Senator Flávio Bolsonaro narrowly finished ahead of incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the first round but failed to secure the majority required for an outright victory. Flávio Bolsonaro Leads Brazil First-Round Vote With virtually all ballots counted, Bolsonaro secured about 47% of valid votes, while Lula received around 45%. Neither candidate crossed the 50% threshold needed to win in the first round, sending Brazil into a runoff scheduled for October 25. The result exceeded expectations for Bolsonaro, who had trailed Lula in several pre-election polls. The contest has reinforced Brazil’s deep political polarisation between the right and the Workers’ Party-led left. Lula and Bolsonaro Advance to October 25 Runoff Lula is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term as president, while Bolsonaro is attempting to extend the political influence of his family after receiving the backing of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. The campaign has focused heavily on the cost of living, crime, corruption allegations, economic management and Brazil’s international alignment. Lula said he would immediately return to campaigning and seek support from voters who backed other candidates in the first round. Brazil Election Also Reshapes Congress Right-wing candidates also performed strongly in congressional and state-level contests, adding to the significance of the presidential result. Bolsonaro described the first-round outcome as evidence that voters wanted political change, while Lula maintained that the runoff remained open. Brazil’s electronic voting system completed the count rapidly, with election authorities reporting no major irregularities affecting the result.
