Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia revealed that the government’s fraud detection system is effectively blocking 1.35 crore fraudulent calls each day, resulting in savings of Rs 2,500 crore. In an interview with PTI, Scindia detailed the impact of the detection system, which has proven to be a robust defense against financial fraud targeting Indian citizens. Blocking Fraud Calls from International Servers According to Scindia, a large portion of spam calls originates from servers outside India. However, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) fraud detection system, including tools like Sanchar Sathi and Chakshu, has been successful in blocking the majority of these calls. Sanchar Sathi has helped secure people’s assets by detecting and intercepting fraudulent activities. "The DoT fraud detection network has saved around Rs 2,500 crore for the public so far through Sanchar Sathi and Chakshu," Scindia explained. Disconnecting Fraudulent Lines and Blocking Headers The system has also led to the disconnection of nearly 290,000 phones involved in fraud and blocked approximately 1.8 million headers used for sending spam messages. Additionally, software implemented by the government detects spoofed international calls posing as Indian numbers, successfully blocking around 13.5 million such calls daily. Collaboration with Law Enforcement and Banking Scindia also emphasized the government’s collaboration with law enforcement agencies and financial institutions to curb fraudulent activities. Over 520 agencies have been integrated into this network to streamline the process. As part of his ministry’s priorities, Scindia highlighted the upcoming rollout of self-reliant 5G by BSNL by May 2024 and full 4G coverage under the saturation scheme by April. He also noted that all remaining rules under the Telecommunications Act 2023 will be finalized by December. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance security and connectivity across the nation, ensuring safer telecommunication channels and greater reliability for users.
