Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president B.K. Hariprasad has triggered a political controversy after comparing the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) with Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and the Taliban while questioning the RSS’s legal registration status in India. Hariprasad Compares RSS With JeM and Taliban Addressing reporters, Hariprasad said there was “no difference” between the RSS, Jaish-e-Mohammed and the Taliban because, according to him, all three were not registered in India. His remarks have intensified the political debate in Karnataka over the legal and organisational status of the RSS. The comparison, however, involves organisations with very different legal classifications. Jaish-e-Mohammed is formally designated as a terrorist organisation under Indian law, while the RSS operates as a socio-cultural organisation and is not classified as a terrorist group. Congress Questions RSS Registration Status Hariprasad’s comments follow Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge’s demand that the RSS clarify under which legal framework it operates, owns property, maintains bank accounts and receives donations. RSS leaders and BJP representatives have maintained that the organisation does not require statutory registration and has functioned since its establishment in 1925 without such registration. The dispute has therefore expanded beyond political rhetoric into questions over organisational structure, finances and legal status. RSS-Congress Political Clash Intensifies Hariprasad also criticised the RSS over its approach to national symbols and backed arguments raised during the continuing Vande Mataram controversy. The remarks have further sharpened tensions between the Congress and BJP-RSS leadership in Karnataka, with the RSS’s registration status emerging as a fresh political flashpoint.
