This was not merely a stranded wild animal being removed from danger. Somewhere upstream was its mother, separated from a newborn calf that had disappeared with the current. Elephants are highly social animals with strong bonds between mothers and calves. One does not need to be a wildlife expert to understand what that separation represents. After the fishermen brought the calf to safety, forest personnel and veterinary officials handled the next delicate stage. The calf had to be checked and returned without allowing unnecessary human interaction to interfere with the reunion. When the mother eventually accepted the calf and began nursing it, the rescue reached the ending everyone had hoped for. A child, in the simplest sense of the word, had been returned to its mother. This Is Also the India We Live In There is a tendency to judge a country through its loudest headlines. When crime happens, when institutions fail or when public behaviour disappoints us, those stories quite rightly receive attention. But they can also create an incomplete picture. There is another India operating quietly beneath the daily noise. It appears when villagers help wildlife trapped in wells, when strangers pull accident victims from damaged vehicles, when fishermen turn their boats into rescue craft during floods, and when ordinary people feed families displaced by disasters. Most of those people will never become famous. Many will not even have their names remembered beyond their local communities. Yet they form an important part of the country's social fabric. The Teesta fishermen belong to that India. They saw something vulnerable in danger and did not first calculate what they would gain from helping it. Compassion Did Not Need Permission What makes the story especially powerful is that saving the calf was not technically their responsibility. Wildlife protection belongs to government departments and trained professionals. But responsibility in an emergency does not always wait for an official designation. The fishermen understood the river better than almost anyone standing on its banks. At that moment, their everyday knowledge became a rescue skill. Their fishing boat became an emergency vessel. Their instinct to help became the bridge between a drowning calf and the forest officials who could eventually return it to its mother. The officials deserve credit as well. Saving the animal from the water was only the first part of the job. Ensuring that it was healthy and safely reunited with its mother required careful handling. The episode worked because ordinary citizens acted immediately and the authorities then completed the rescue. It is exactly how such situations should unfold. Good News Deserves Space Too None of this means journalism should look away from uncomfortable stories. Crime must be reported, governments must be questioned and failures must be exposed. A healthy society needs journalism that tells people when something has gone badly wrong. But it also needs journalism that notices when something goes beautifully right. If our news diet contains only conflict and outrage, we risk convincing ourselves that kindness has disappeared. It has not. Much of it simply happens quietly, without political slogans, television debates or social media campaigns. The fishermen on the Teesta did not need a national conversation before deciding what was right. There was a helpless animal in the river. They had a boat. They could help. So they went after it. The Best of Ordinary India There will be darker headlines tomorrow. There will be arguments, tragedies and stories that demand anger. But this one deserves to remain uncomplicated. A newborn elephant calf was being carried away by the Teesta. A group of fishermen chased it down the river, brought it to safety and helped make possible its reunion with a waiting mother. No grand achievement was announced. No monument was built. No powerful person was involved. Just ordinary people refusing to stand by while a helpless life disappeared downstream.
