ATACMS missiles – Bharat Pulse News

Ukraine has launched an overnight attack on Russia's Bryansk region using six US-made ATACMS long-range missiles, according to the Russian Defence Ministry. Reports indicate that Russian air defense systems intercepted five of the missiles, while one caused a fire after debris landed on a military facility. No casualties or significant damage were reported. Missile Attack and Possible Intent The ATACMS missiles, produced by Lockheed Martin, boast extended range and precision capabilities, making them a potential threat to military infrastructure. Analysts speculate that the strike may have targeted military equipment, logistics hubs, or ammunition depots to weaken Russia's operational capacity. US Approval Sparks Controversy Ukraine has long sought authorization from the United States to deploy ATACMS missiles against Russian targets. While initially hesitant, citing fears of escalating the conflict, the Biden administration reportedly approved their use in recent months. This shift has been met with sharp criticism from Russia. Russian lawmakers have described the US's approval as a dangerous escalation, with one official warning, "This is a very big step towards the start of World War Three." Putin's Revised Nuclear Doctrine On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a revised nuclear doctrine. The new policy stipulates that a conventional attack on Russia, if supported by a nuclear power, would be considered a joint assault, warranting a nuclear response. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, “The Russian Federation retains the right to use nuclear weapons in the case of aggression using conventional weapons against it.” Broader Geopolitical Implications The use of US-made missiles and the revision of Russia's nuclear doctrine mark a critical juncture in the ongoing conflict. With Ukraine employing both foreign-provided and domestically produced weapons, the situation continues to escalate. Impact of US Leadership on the Conflict The geopolitical landscape could shift further depending on the outcome of the 2024 US presidential elections. Experts suggest that a Donald Trump presidency may alter US support for Ukraine, as Trump has previously criticized American aid to Kyiv. "Every time Zelenskyy comes to this country, he walks away with $60 billion," Trump remarked at an event in September. The ongoing developments underscore the heightened stakes and growing complexities in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
