The 2026 Asian Games have barely begun in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, and the organisers are already dealing with problems that would normally make uncomfortable headlines for the host of one of the world’s biggest multi-sport events. Accommodation shortages, questionable room allocations, accreditation delays, transport complaints and administrative confusion have all surfaced around Games involving roughly 17,000 athletes and officials. Japan chose not to construct a conventional athletes’ village, instead relying on hotels, temporary accommodation and even a cruise ship as part of a cheaper and supposedly more practical model. The experiment may have sounded innovative on paper, but its weaknesses became visible even before the opening ceremony. Then came an incident that had little to do with the complexity of housing thousands of athletes. A flag-hoisting ceremony was delayed for more than an hour after Taiwan’s sports minister, Lee Yang, was initially prevented from attending despite reportedly having the required credentials. What should have been among the simplest events on the Asian Games calendar turned into confusion between officials before the issue was eventually resolved. The Olympic Council of Asia has also acknowledged criticism over accommodation and transport while defending the overall hosting model. Now comes an uncomfortable question. Imagine these exact scenes occurring in New Delhi. Would much of the global media be discussing an “innovative accommodation model facing logistical challenges”? Or would we already be reading headlines asking whether India was capable of hosting a major international sporting event? A Games Struggling Before the Competition Settles In There is nothing wrong with Japan trying to organise a more economical Asian Games. Building expensive infrastructure that has little use after a tournament can waste public money. The OCA has defended the decision not to construct a traditional athletes’ village, even arguing that such a project could have become a “white elephant.” Instead, athletes and officials have been spread between hotels, container-style temporary accommodation and a cruise ship. The problem is execution. The number of participants rose beyond initial expectations, accommodation arrangements came under pressure, some room allocations raised privacy concerns and even Japan’s own Olympic team began examining alternative accommodation. These are not rumours created by hostile social-media accounts. They are documented problems acknowledged by officials and international reporting. Other embarrassing incidents have added to the impression of weak coordination. At a men’s hockey match involving South Korea, North Korea’s national anthem was mistakenly played before organisers apologised. South Korean teams have separately raised accommodation and transport concerns. The Flag Ceremony Should Have Been the Easy Part Transporting thousands of athletes across multiple venues is complicated. Allocating thousands of rooms is difficult. Unexpected increases in participation can stretch even a well-prepared organising committee. A flag ceremony is different. The delegations are known. The credentials are issued. The protocol is predetermined. Officials should know who is permitted to attend, where they should stand and when proceedings should begin. That is why the delay surrounding the flag-hoisting ceremony deserves particular attention. When an international sporting event cannot smoothly conduct something as basic as ceremonial protocol, it raises questions about communication at the management level rather than merely shortages of rooms or buses. Yet there has been remarkably little inclination to convert these failures into a wider judgment about Japan itself. And that restraint would be perfectly reasonable — if the same restraint were shown to everybody. Remember What Happened to Delhi The contrast with the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi is difficult to ignore. India unquestionably had serious problems. Some accommodation was unfinished or dirty, infrastructure concerns emerged and several international teams complained. Those failures deserved scrutiny. But international coverage quickly moved beyond reporting individual shortcomings. Delhi became a “crisis-hit” Games. Questions were raised about whether the event could even proceed, while photographs of dirty bathrooms, damaged facilities and unfinished accommodation travelled around the world. One prominent report described the Games as sinking into “chaos and recrimination,” while another headline asked whether organisers had just 48 hours to save the event. More importantly, the story frequently became bigger than the organising committee. The Games were presented as a test of India’s arrival on the global stage. Administrative failure was allowed to become commentary about a country. Japan deserves criticism without national humiliation. But India deserved that distinction too. When Failure Confirms a Stereotype This is where the global media needs some uncomfortable introspection. Countries do not enter international coverage with identical reputations. Japan is commonly associated with discipline, cleanliness, technology, punctuality and efficiency. India is frequently approached through narratives involving overcrowding, bureaucracy, disorder and weak infrastructure. Those assumptions can influence how identical events are interpreted. When something goes wrong in Japan, it can be treated as an unusual breakdown in an otherwise efficient system. When something goes wrong in India, the same failure can be treated as confirmation of what outsiders already believed about India. That is how racial and cultural bias can operate without anyone printing an openly racist headline. It appears through expectations, adjectives, prominence and the willingness to generalise from an organisational mistake into a judgment about an entire society. Calling every difference in reporting “racism” without evidence would weaken the argument. But pretending that historical stereotypes and racialised perceptions never influence international coverage would be equally naive. Japan Does Not Need a Free Pass None of this means Japan should now receive the hostile coverage India faced in 2010. The answer to unfair journalism is not more unfair journalism. Japan should be judged on what actually happens. Its cost-saving Asian Games model deserves credit where it works, and criticism where it fails. Organisers should also be given an opportunity to correct early problems as the competition progresses. But that principle must apply universally. If room shortages and transport failures are “logistical challenges” in Nagoya, comparable problems should not automatically become evidence of national incompetence when they occur in Delhi. If a ceremonial breakdown in Japan is an administrative mistake, the same type of mistake elsewhere should not become a civilisation-level judgment. One Standard for Every Host The real issue exposed by Aichi-Nagoya is therefore larger than a cruise ship, temporary rooms, delayed buses or one chaotic flag ceremony. It is about the lens through which different countries are viewed. Scrutinise India when India fails. Scrutinise China when China fails. Scrutinise Japan when Japan fails. But use the same vocabulary, the same level of scepticism and the same willingness — or unwillingness — to turn organisational incompetence into a national stereotype. Global journalism rightly demands accountability from the countries it covers. It should demand the same accountability from itself. Because if one country’s chaos becomes an indictment of that country while another country’s chaos is merely an unfortunate logistical hiccup, the problem is no longer only with the Games organisers. It is also with the people telling the world how to see them.
