At the time, it was easy to treat the episode as another extraordinary chapter in the increasingly political India-Pakistan cricket rivalry. There had been tensions throughout the tournament, including the absence of the customary handshakes. The trophy ceremony simply appeared to be the final dramatic moment of an unusually charged competition. Then, one year later, it happened again. India’s women defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs to win the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup, but once again an Indian championship ended without the winning team accepting the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. This time the institutional nature of the decision became even clearer. Head coach Amol Muzumdar publicly backed the BCCI’s stand, while reports said the Indian board had communicated its position to the ACC before the presentation controversy unfolded. That repetition completely changes how these incidents should be understood. Once can be dismissed as a protest. Twice, involving two different Indian national teams in consecutive Asia Cups, begins to establish something much more significant. India appears to have drawn a new line in sporting relations with Pakistan: participating in a tournament is not the same thing as political normalisation. 2025 Established the Precedent The importance of what happened in the men’s Asia Cup last year should not be underestimated. India did not merely avoid a ceremonial handshake or issue a statement after the tournament. The team had just defeated Pakistan in a final and was prepared to celebrate becoming Asian champions without physically receiving the trophy rather than accept it from Naqvi. That gave the gesture weight. A trophy presentation is one of the defining moments of any major sporting competition. Players spend years preparing for the opportunity to stand on that podium. Captains dream of lifting the silverware. Broadcasters build their closing images around it. India effectively said that even this photograph was dispensable. The championship had been won on the field. Whether Mohsin Naqvi personally handed over the physical trophy was irrelevant to that achievement. At the time, the decision could still have been interpreted as a particularly forceful response to the circumstances surrounding that tournament. The 2026 women’s Asia Cup has removed much of that ambiguity. 2026 Shows This Is Bigger Than One Team The personnel changed. The captain changed. The tournament changed from men’s cricket to women’s cricket. The principle did not. That is what makes this year’s incident far more interesting than another disagreement over a presentation ceremony. The Indian women were not improvising foreign policy on the podium. Muzumdar’s comments make clear that the team stood with the BCCI’s position. Reports that the board had conveyed its stance to the ACC beforehand reinforce the impression that this was an institutional decision rather than an emotional reaction by players after winning a final. That is exactly how such situations should be handled. Indian cricketers should be asked to win cricket matches, not decide India’s Pakistan policy while standing beneath television cameras. If there are political boundaries surrounding ceremonies, handshakes or interactions with officials, those boundaries should come from the institution representing Indian cricket. Two consecutive Asia Cups now suggest that the boundary is becoming remarkably clear. Play Them, Beat Them, But Don't Give Them the Photograph For years, the India-Pakistan sporting debate has frequently been presented as a choice between two extremes. Either India must boycott Pakistan completely, or everybody must pretend that sport somehow exists in a vacuum where politics disappears the moment players enter a stadium. Neither position adequately reflects reality. India and Pakistan participate in multinational tournaments. That means their teams will periodically encounter one another in ICC and Asian competitions. India withdrawing from every competition merely because Pakistan is participating would impose substantial sporting consequences on India itself. But participation does not require pretending that relations between the countries are normal. That appears to be the much more practical doctrine now taking shape: play the tournament, play Pakistan when the competition requires it, try to beat them, win the championship, but retain control over the political symbolism surrounding Indian participation. There is an enormous difference between facing Pakistan across a cricket pitch and giving a senior Pakistani political figure the photograph of himself presenting an Indian captain with a championship trophy. India increasingly seems unwilling to pretend otherwise. Mohsin Naqvi Makes That Distinction Impossible to Ignore This controversy cannot be separated from the unusual combination of positions held by Mohsin Naqvi. During the 2025 Asia Cup dispute, Naqvi was simultaneously president of the ACC, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board and Pakistan’s interior minister. He was therefore not simply another sporting administrator carrying out a ceremonial responsibility. That distinction matters. A trophy presentation involving an ordinary cricket official can reasonably be treated as part of tournament protocol. A presentation involving a serving senior political figure from Pakistan inevitably carries wider symbolism when the recipient is the captain of India. India is entitled to decide whether it wants that symbolism. The ACC can determine who occupies its offices. It can establish its tournament procedures. But holding an administrative position cannot automatically entitle someone to a politically valuable photograph with an Indian national team. And India has now demonstrated twice that it is prepared to sacrifice the conventional trophy-lifting moment rather than surrender that choice. Participation Is Not Normalisation This is perhaps the most useful lesson to emerge from the entire episode. India does not need to choose between total sporting disengagement and artificial displays of normality. There is considerable space between those two positions. International sporting obligations can be fulfilled. Players can compete professionally. India can chase championships. Pakistan can be faced on the field whenever tournament structures require it. None of that requires India to manufacture gestures suggesting that the broader relationship has suddenly become ordinary. This distinction is particularly useful because it creates a policy that can actually be sustained. Complete boycott demands tend to return before every major tournament, only to collide with the practical realities of international sport. The alternative has often been to participate and then accept every ceremonial convention as though nothing outside the stadium matters. The emerging Indian approach is sharper. Competition is competition. Diplomacy is diplomacy. One does not automatically confer the other. The BCCI Should Make This the Standard There is also value in consistency. If India intends to maintain this position, tournament organisers should know it before competitions begin. Players should not be placed in awkward situations at presentation ceremonies, and there should be no scope for manufactured drama over who will hand over a trophy. The BCCI should simply establish the principle clearly. India will honour its obligations in multinational tournaments. Indian teams will compete against whoever the draw places in front of them. But ceremonial interaction involving serving Pakistani political figures will be governed by India’s own institutional position, not by assumptions made by tournament organisers. That would remove uncertainty while keeping the responsibility exactly where it belongs: with the board, rather than the players. The 2026 episode appears to show movement in precisely that direction. The reported advance communication with the ACC is particularly important because it suggests India was not waiting until the podium ceremony to make its position known. Two Asia Cups Have Now Drawn the Line Put the two tournaments beside each other and the message becomes difficult to miss. In 2025, India’s men defeated Pakistan to win the Asia Cup and declined to receive the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. In 2026, India’s women won their Asia Cup and again declined to accept the trophy from Naqvi. Different teams. Different captains. Different years. The same line. India is not refusing to compete. It is refusing to confuse competition with political normalisation. That may ultimately prove far more effective than endless arguments about whether India and Pakistan should ever share a cricket field. India can enter the tournament. India can play Pakistan. India can beat Pakistan. India can win the championship. What India does not have to do is surrender control of the photograph afterwards. Play them. Beat them. Win the trophy. But India decides the optics.
