Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed support for the removal of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's tomb in Khuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Calls for Removal by Shivaji Descendant The call for the tomb’s removal was initiated by Udayanraje Bhosale, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament and a direct descendant of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He has been advocating for the tomb’s removal, arguing that such a monument should not exist in Maharashtra. Controversy Sparked by Praise for Aurangzeb The controversy gained momentum following remarks by Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi, who praised Aurangzeb and claimed that he had built temples and was not a cruel ruler. His comments led to his suspension from the Maharashtra legislative assembly until the end of the budget session on March 26. Historical Significance of Aurangzeb's Tomb Aurangzeb’s tomb, located in Khuldabad, is known for its simplicity compared to other grand Mughal mausoleums. It is a modest, open grave covered with a plain white cloth, as per the emperor’s wishes. The site also houses the dargah of Sheikh Zainuddin, a revered Sufi saint, adding to its historical and cultural significance.
