Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has defended the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, asserting that its provisions do not undermine press freedom or investigative journalism. Speaking in New Delhi on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Vaishnaw said constitutional protections for journalists remain intact and invited media organisations to discuss concerns about the legislation. Ashwini Vaishnaw Defends DPDP Act and Press Freedom Vaishnaw, who holds the Electronics and Information Technology and Information and Broadcasting portfolios, maintained that the legislation was designed to protect citizens' personal information without restricting legitimate journalism. He explained that the law followed the Supreme Court's landmark judgment recognising privacy as a fundamental right. The minister also highlighted consultations involving newspapers, television channels and technology companies before the legislation was enacted. He said the government was willing to examine suggestions and consider changes if necessary. News Publishers Challenge Data Protection Law in Supreme Court The Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA), representing 21 news organisations, has challenged provisions of the DPDP Act and its accompanying rules. The association argues that the absence of a specific exemption for journalism could restrict investigative reporting and expose confidential sources. Publishers have raised concerns that requirements involving consent, notification and deletion of personal data could interfere with investigations into corruption and other matters of public interest. Supreme Court Seeks Government Response on DPDP Act On October 27, a Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant sought the Centre's response to the publishers' petition. The court emphasised the importance of balancing individual privacy rights with journalistic freedom. The petition also questions amendments affecting disclosure of personal information under the Right to Information Act. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on November 17, while the government has indicated its willingness to consider additional safeguards for journalism.
