Foreign ministers from ASEAN have opened high-level talks in Manila amid growing concern that renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran could disrupt energy supplies, accelerate inflation and weaken economic growth across Southeast Asia. ASEAN Discusses US-Iran Conflict Diplomats from the 11-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations expressed serious concern over the escalating Middle East conflict. They called for maximum restraint, an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to dialogue. ASEAN members are heavily dependent on imported oil and gas, making the disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz a major regional concern. Rising crude prices could increase transport, electricity and food costs across Southeast Asian economies. The bloc is considering faster implementation of regional oil-sharing arrangements designed to support member states during supply emergencies. South China Sea Tensions The 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will also address territorial tensions in the South China Sea. The Philippines recently accused Chinese Coast Guard personnel of attacking a Filipino naval officer near the disputed Second Thomas Shoal, an allegation Beijing rejected. ASEAN and China have spent years negotiating a maritime code of conduct intended to prevent confrontations in the contested waters, but progress has remained slow. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi are expected to attend related meetings and could hold separate talks in Manila. Representatives from India, Russia, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Britain and the European Union are also participating. Myanmar Crisis on ASEAN Agenda Foreign ministers will examine ASEAN’s stalled peace initiative for Myanmar, where civil conflict continues five years after the military coup. The bloc’s Five-Point Consensus has failed to produce a meaningful reduction in violence or initiate sustained political dialogue. An informal consultation on Myanmar is scheduled during the Manila meetings. Together, the Middle East conflict, South China Sea disputes and Myanmar crisis present a major test of ASEAN’s diplomatic influence.
