artificial intelligence arms race

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have concluded a three-day Washington summit without announcing a major agreement to slow the intensifying artificial intelligence race between the world’s two biggest economies. Trump-Xi Summit Focuses on AI Competition The state visit covered artificial intelligence, trade, Iran, Ukraine and Taiwan, but produced limited concrete policy outcomes. The most significant announcement was a two-month extension of the existing US-China trade truce. Artificial intelligence emerged as one of the summit’s most closely watched issues amid growing concerns over the rapid development of increasingly powerful AI systems in both countries. Xi said the United States and China share a responsibility to develop and manage artificial intelligence for beneficial purposes while ensuring that advanced AI remains under human control. No Major US-China AI Agreement Announced Despite expectations that Washington and Beijing could establish new mechanisms for managing AI risks, no major agreement was announced to pause development, create technical working groups or introduce common restrictions on advanced artificial intelligence systems. Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States must maintain its technological advantage over China and has supported continued investment in advanced AI infrastructure and development. China is pursuing its own aggressive artificial intelligence strategy, including plans to expand the adoption of next-generation AI agents and smart devices across its economy. US-China AI Race Set to Continue The Washington summit therefore left the broader US-China artificial intelligence competition largely unchanged. Both countries remain focused on advancing their domestic AI capabilities while keeping diplomatic channels open. Trump and Xi are expected to meet again later this year, providing further opportunities for discussions on artificial intelligence, trade and wider strategic tensions between Washington and Beijing.
