In a move to protect domestic industries, India has imposed provisional anti-dumping duties on aluminium foil imports from China. The Finance Ministry has announced that the duties will range between $619 and $873 per metric tonne and will remain in effect for six months. Scope of the Anti-Dumping Duties The duties apply to aluminium foil up to 80 microns in thickness, with an exemption for foil below 5.5 microns that is used for non-capacitor applications. Identified Chinese Exporters Several Chinese companies have been identified as engaging in dumping practices, exporting aluminium foil to India at prices below normal value. These companies include Henan Mingtai Technology Development Co. Ltd., Henan Mingsheng New Material Technology Co. Ltd., Sunho New Materials Technology Co. Ltd., Shanghai Sunho Aluminium Foil Co. Ltd., Jiangsu Dingsheng New Materials Joint-Stock Co. Ltd., Inner Mongolia Lian Shen New Energy Co. Ltd., and Hangzhou Five Star Aluminium Co. Ltd. The highest duty of $873 per metric tonne will be imposed on imports from producers not specifically listed. Global Trade Context This development aligns with a broader global trend of protectionist measures. Countries such as the United States have implemented high tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to counter unfair trade practices. By imposing these duties, India is taking steps to safeguard its industries from the effects of global market fluctuations and increasing competition from foreign suppliers. Enforcement and Exemptions The anti-dumping duties will be enforced for six months, with payments required in Indian currency. The timeframe allows for a detailed review and potential adjustments based on further findings.
