Afghanistan’s Taliban administration has signalled that it would welcome US investment in mining, infrastructure, agriculture and trade as Kabul seeks to rebuild economic ties with Washington five years after returning to power. Taliban Invites US Investment in Afghanistan Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said Afghanistan’s relationship with the United States should focus on future cooperation rather than being defined solely by two decades of war. Muttaqi said the Taliban administration’s economic policy was open and that American companies would be welcome to participate in projects across several major sectors. However, there is no confirmation that a formal investment proposal has been presented directly to the White House or that Washington is considering such an arrangement. Afghanistan Offers Access to $1 Trillion Minerals Afghanistan possesses mineral deposits estimated to be worth more than $1 trillion, including copper, iron ore, lithium, gold, uranium, zinc and other strategically important resources. Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban administration has pursued mining and investment agreements with countries including China and Iran as it attempts to attract foreign capital. Kabul also hopes improved international engagement could eventually help ease sanctions and unlock billions of dollars in Afghan assets frozen overseas. Taliban Rejects US Return to Bagram Base Muttaqi rejected calls for the United States to regain control of Bagram Air Base, saying Afghanistan’s military and civilian facilities are national assets. He instead said Washington could reopen its embassy in Kabul, maintaining that security around the diplomatic compound had been restored. Major obstacles remain to closer US-Taliban relations, including international sanctions, Afghanistan’s human rights record and sweeping restrictions imposed on women and girls.
