A year after the Air India Flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad claimed 260 lives, the Gujarat government has unveiled a ₹547 crore redevelopment plan for the damaged B.J. Medical College campus. The project aims to replace structures destroyed in the disaster with modern medical and academic facilities. AI171 Crash Site Redevelopment Plan The redevelopment project will transform the area where the Boeing 787 crashed into student hostels and campus buildings on June 12, 2025. The new plan includes upgraded medical infrastructure, academic facilities and residential accommodation for students and doctors. Authorities said the redevelopment is intended both to restore lost infrastructure and to strengthen healthcare capacity in Ahmedabad following one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters. ₹547 Crore Medical Hub Project The Gujarat government has approved a ₹547 crore investment to rebuild the affected campus. The project will include new medical facilities, teaching infrastructure and support services aimed at expanding healthcare and medical education capacity. Earlier, officials had also announced plans for a new hostel complex to replace the structures destroyed in the crash. The hostel project is expected to significantly increase accommodation capacity for students. One Year After Air India AI171 Crash Flight AI171 crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 people on the ground. The aircraft struck the B.J. Medical College hostel and mess complex, causing extensive damage to multiple buildings. As the first anniversary of the tragedy is observed, reconstruction efforts and compensation payments to affected families continue, while authorities work to rebuild the campus and restore key facilities.
