President Donald Trump's artificial intelligence task force has announced plans to commission a comprehensive report examining the risks posed by advanced AI systems, including cybersecurity threats, biological security and human oversight. The decision was taken during the newly established Super Intelligence Force's first meeting in Washington on October 15, 2026, as concerns grow over the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Trump AI Task Force to Examine Cybersecurity Risks The Super Intelligence Force will request a report from the President's Council of Advisers on Science and Technology to assess potential threats associated with increasingly powerful AI systems. The review will examine cybersecurity, biosecurity, AI model control and accountability. The White House said the task force would establish mechanisms requiring AI laboratories to provide early warnings about security breaches, hacking attempts, system vulnerabilities and attempts to bypass safety restrictions. White House Plans AI Safety Coordination Committee The task force, led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, will establish a coordination committee involving the Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission and other government agencies. The committee will focus on law enforcement coordination, consumer protection and risks associated with advanced AI technologies. Officials also plan to engage technology developers, consumer advocacy organisations, civil liberties groups and federal and state authorities. However, the inaugural meeting did not include proposals for new AI legislation or mandatory regulatory requirements. Trump Favours Voluntary AI Regulation Amid China Competition President Trump has opposed extensive government regulation of artificial intelligence, arguing that excessive restrictions could weaken America's technological competitiveness against China. His administration instead supports voluntary industry safeguards, including independent safety assessments and regular discussions among leading AI companies. The initiative comes as artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly important issue ahead of the November 2026 US midterm elections. Concerns over job displacement, rising electricity costs associated with data centres and the potential loss of human control over advanced AI systems have intensified public debate.
