Afghan diplomacy – Bharat Pulse News

Pakistan has signaled that it will not hastily extend formal recognition to the Taliban-led regime in Afghanistan. Senior Pakistani officials have emphasized that any decision on diplomatic ties will be contingent upon key criteria being met by the new Kabul government. Conditional Recognition Foreign Ministry spokespersons clarified that Pakistan aims for gradual engagement, not immediate recognition. They want clear demonstrations of inclusivity—particularly the inclusion of women and ethnic minorities in governance—and tangible measures addressing terrorism threats emanating from Afghan soil. Security and Governance Concerns Senior diplomats underscored Pakistan’s primary requirement: a Taliban administration that ensures internal stability and guarantees against extremist groups using Afghan territory to launch attacks into Pakistan. They indicated these assurances would play a vital role in any decision to upgrade bilateral relations. International Alignment Observers see Islamabad’s approach as cautious and in line with other regional and Western nations, many of which have deferred recognition pending progress on human rights and extremism. Analysts suggest Pakistan aims to retain diplomatic leverage, signaling that its support is not automatic or unconditional. Economic and Humanitarian Ties Despite the diplomatic hesitation, Pakistan continues to engage with Afghanistan on practical fronts—maintaining cross-border trade, extending humanitarian aid, and supporting refugee management. Such engagement suggests that Pakistan seeks to balance economic interests with strategic discretion. Timing and Next Steps While no formal timeline has been announced, officials indicate that decisions may coincide with international diplomatic shifts or observable changes in Taliban policy. Pakistan appears poised to wait for external benchmarks—such as U.N. or multilateral pressure—to reach an optimal moment before advancing formal recognition.
