The Union government has released an additional ₹1,09,019 crore in tax devolution to state governments, providing funds ahead of the regular monthly transfer scheduled for August 10. Centre Releases Advance Tax Devolution The additional instalment was transferred on August 1 to strengthen the financial position of states and help them meet immediate spending requirements. The release is separate from the normal monthly devolution due later in August. It gives state governments earlier access to their constitutionally determined share of central tax collections rather than representing a new grant or loan from the Centre. Tax devolution refers to the distribution of a portion of divisible Union tax revenue among states according to the formula recommended by the Finance Commission. States Receive Funds for Capital Spending The Finance Ministry said the advance release would help states accelerate capital expenditure and finance development and welfare-related programmes. State governments can use the additional liquidity to maintain spending on infrastructure, healthcare, education and other priority schemes without waiting for the scheduled monthly transfer. Capital expenditure includes investment in long-term public assets such as roads, bridges, irrigation systems, hospitals and transport networks. Higher state-level capital spending can also support construction activity, employment and demand across related industries. Tax Sharing Under Finance Commission States are collectively entitled to 41% of the divisible pool of central taxes under the framework recommended by the Sixteenth Finance Commission for the 2026-31 period. The distribution among individual states is based on factors including population, income distance, geographical area, demographic performance, forest cover and fiscal capacity. The ₹1,09,019 crore transfer follows similar advance instalments released periodically by the Union government to improve state liquidity and support expenditure. The regular August instalment will be transferred separately under the existing schedule.
