The controversy surrounding IIT Bombay has raised disturbing questions about the independence of India's premier academic institutions, the growing influence of external pressure groups and the responsibility of elected governments to protect educational excellence from political interference. A viral video showing IIT Bombay Director Professor Shireesh Kedare with folded hands during an interaction with a delegation of activists has intensified concerns about whether the leadership of one of India's most prestigious institutions is being subjected to pressure amid an ongoing criminal investigation. The controversy originates from the tragic death of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode on September 18, 2026. His family subsequently alleged caste-based discrimination and harassment involving Professor Suryanarayana Doolla and the institute's administration. The allegations prompted a police investigation, student demonstrations and demands for action against those accused. Both the professor and the director have denied caste discrimination allegations. The investigation must establish the facts, determine responsibility and ensure justice through established legal procedures. However, events on October 14 introduced an entirely different concern. Activists associated with external organisations gathered outside IIT Bombay, demanding action over the case. Mumbai Police reportedly detained several protesters while facilitating a meeting between six representatives and Director Kedare. According to the police account, the protesters requested the meeting, following which their representatives were taken to meet the director. What remains unexplained is whether IIT Bombay voluntarily agreed to receive the delegation, who authorised its entry and whether police merely communicated a request or exercised pressure on the administration. For Bharat Pulse News, this controversy raises a fundamental question. Can India's institutions of national importance remain academically independent if external organisations can mobilise protests and obtain access to their leadership during sensitive disciplinary or criminal proceedings? The issue is not the right to protest or seek justice. It is whether organised pressure can be allowed to compromise institutional authority, academic discipline and due process. Who Authorised This Delegation to Meet the IIT Bombay Director? The first question concerns the legitimacy and authority of the delegation itself. Who appointed these representatives, what formal relationship did they have with the deceased student's family, and who authorised their access to IIT Bombay's director? Tomorrow, another organisation could mobilise a crowd outside an IIT, IIM or university and demand immediate action against a faculty member. Would the administration be expected to entertain every such demand? Academic institutions cannot become venues where organised political pressure determines who gets access to administrators. Mumbai Police Must Explain Its Role Mumbai Police's involvement presents an equally serious question. Its responsibility is to maintain public order, prevent unlawful entry and ensure the safety of everyone involved. It does not automatically possess authority to compel the director of an autonomous academic institution to receive an external delegation. The reported police account confirms that six representatives were taken to meet Director Kedare. It does not establish whether the director consented, whether institutional security procedures were followed or whether any instructions were issued to the administration. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, whose government is responsible for Maharashtra's policing, should seek an explanation. The police must clarify whether they simply facilitated a mutually agreed meeting or acted beyond their proper responsibilities. A peaceful resolution of a demonstration cannot justify compromising institutional authority. IIT Bombay Is an Institution of National Importance, Not a Political Playground India's IITs represent decades of national investment in science, engineering, research and technological advancement. Their achievements have contributed enormously to the country's economic development and international reputation. Protecting these institutions requires more than improving infrastructure, funding laboratories or celebrating their rankings. Under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, institutional governance responsibilities belong to established authorities, including the Board of Governors and the director. These arrangements exist to preserve administrative accountability and academic integrity. If disciplinary decisions become vulnerable to outside pressure, faculty members may find themselves operating under the shadow of organised campaigns rather than established academic regulations. Such an environment risks weakening institutional confidence and undermining the standards that make India's premier educational institutions respected internationally. Justice for Sahil Wakode Must Not Mean Denying Professors Due Process The death of Sahil Wakode deserves a thorough, independent and impartial investigation. His family has every right to seek accountability, and allegations of caste discrimination must be examined seriously. Any wrongdoing established through evidence must result in appropriate legal and institutional consequences. However, allegations cannot substitute for proof. Professor Doolla and other accused individuals remain entitled to due process, just as the deceased student's family is entitled to an impartial investigation. Neither political pressure nor public outrage should determine guilt before investigators establish the facts. Academic institutions must also retain the authority to investigate examination misconduct and enforce disciplinary regulations fairly. The responsibility to prevent discrimination does not eliminate the need for academic discipline. Both principles must coexist within a framework of consistent rules, impartial investigation and equality before the law. Political Organisations Must Be Kept From Influencing Academic Decisions India must establish firm boundaries preventing external political organisations from using intimidation, unauthorised entry or organised pressure to influence academic and disciplinary decisions. Whether such organisations identify with the political left, right, caste-based movements or any other ideology is irrelevant. The same restrictions must apply to all. Students must retain their lawful rights to protest, organise and raise grievances. Families must have access to credible complaint mechanisms. However, outside organisations cannot be permitted to dictate disciplinary outcomes or undermine institutional independence through demonstrations. The government's responsibility is to ensure that allegations are investigated through appropriate mechanisms while campus security, academic decision-making and institutional governance remain protected from coercion. PM Modi, Amit Shah and Devendra Fadnavis Must Answer PM Modi's government repeatedly speaks about transforming India into a global centre for education, innovation and technological development. Those ambitions require academic institutions that can operate independently and confidently, without unlawful interference from external political interests. The Union government is responsible for the national higher-education framework, while Maharashtra's government carries direct responsibility for its police. Amit Shah, as Union Home Minister, also has a prominent role in national discussions concerning security and institutional safeguards, although Mumbai Police does not ordinarily operate under his command. The immediate responsibility for explaining the police response rests with Maharashtra's authorities. Beyond that, the Union government must consider whether institutions of national importance require stronger and more consistent protections against external coercion. If India's political leadership cannot guarantee that its premier academic institutions remain independent of unlawful pressure, questions about the effectiveness of its institutional safeguards are entirely justified. General Category Frustration Is Emerging as a Political Accountability Question Bharat Pulse News' examination of online reactions has encountered considerable frustration among voices identifying with General Category interests. Some have questioned whether the BJP leadership is adequately protecting academic merit, institutional independence and the right of faculty members to receive impartial treatment when allegations arise. Without clear safeguards, administrators could face repeated demands for meetings, disciplinary action and public commitments before investigations are completed. Such pressures risk damaging academic confidence, discouraging independent decision-making and reducing serious educational disputes to political confrontations. The government must ensure that institutions retain control over campus access, administrative meetings and disciplinary processes while maintaining transparent procedures for legitimate grievances. IIT Bombay and the Government Must Act IIT Bombay's Board of Governors should establish who approved the October 14 meeting, whether Director Kedare voluntarily consented, whether proper visitor procedures were followed and whether any improper pressure occurred. Mumbai Police must explain its role, and the Maharashtra government should ensure that officers acted within their lawful responsibilities. Where procedural shortcomings are established, corrective action must follow. The Union government should also consider stronger guidelines protecting institutions of national importance from coercive external interference while preserving students' constitutional rights and legitimate avenues for seeking justice. Academic Independence Is a National Asset, Not a Political Bargaining Chip The viral video of IIT Bombay's director may ultimately prove to show nothing more than a customary gesture of greeting. Yet the circumstances surrounding the delegation's access have raised questions that cannot be dismissed merely because the footage is open to interpretation. India's academic institutions must be accountable, but accountability cannot mean surrendering their independence to whichever outside organisation mobilises the loudest demonstration. Faculty members deserve fair procedures, students deserve justice, and administrators must be free to discharge their responsibilities without unlawful pressure. PM Modi, Amit Shah and Devendra Fadnavis must recognise the importance of protecting these principles within their respective areas of responsibility. India cannot aspire to global leadership in science and technology while allowing political coercion to undermine the institutions expected to deliver that ambition. Academic independence is not a privilege to be negotiated with pressure groups. It is a national asset that must be protected.
