India has recently witnessed a noisy campaign against alleged electoral manipulation, with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), led by Abhijeet Dipke, joining opposition voices accusing PM Modi and the Election Commission of undermining democracy. Slogans of “Vote Chori” have dominated protests, speeches and social media campaigns. But a Supreme Court order concerning elections in AAP-governed Punjab has presented these self-proclaimed defenders of democracy with an uncomfortable test. When electoral malpractice is established through a judicial investigation rather than merely alleged at a political rally, will the outrage remain equally loud? When the Supreme Court Exposed Punjab's Electoral Irregularities On September 28, 2026, the Supreme Court ordered fresh elections in 50 municipal wards in Punjab, including 28 in Patiala district and 22 in Moga district. The order, made public on October 7, followed an investigation by a court-appointed commission headed by retired Justice Nirmaljit Kaur. The findings were damning. Opposition candidates had been prevented from filing nominations. Nomination papers were snatched, torn or destroyed. Candidates faced assault, intimidation, detention and coercion. In two Patiala wards, the commission also found serious evidence of bogus or multiple voting and intimidation. These were not allegations casually circulated on social media. They were findings examined and accepted by India's highest court, which cancelled the affected elections and ordered fresh polling within six weeks under judicial monitoring. Perhaps most significantly, the AAP-governed Punjab administration, through its counsel, raised no objection to accepting the commission's recommendations. The Convenient Geography of Vote Chori Now comes the obvious question. Where is the equivalent outrage from AAP and CJP over Punjab? When allegations concern the BJP, CJP's leadership is quick to invoke the Constitution, democratic accountability and the supposed destruction of electoral institutions. On October 8, Dipke was publicly accusing PM Modi of vote theft during protests against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Yet Punjab presents something considerably more concrete: an actual Supreme Court order setting aside 50 elections following documented interference with the democratic process. The cases concern different forms of alleged electoral wrongdoing, but the democratic principle remains identical. A citizen's right to a meaningful election includes the right to choose between candidates who have been allowed to contest freely. What use is protecting a voter's name on the electoral roll if opposition candidates are prevented from appearing on the ballot in the first place? If “Vote Chori” is genuinely a matter of democratic principle rather than political convenience, Punjab deserves the same anger, the same slogans and the same demands for accountability. CJP and Its AAP Parentage: The Links Are Not Imaginary CJP presents itself as an independent youth movement. However, its political origins deserve scrutiny, particularly when its leadership claims to represent a fresh alternative to established political parties. Abhijeet Dipke has publicly acknowledged having worked with AAP. An investigation published in August 2026 found that six members of CJP's 12-member core leadership had previously been associated with AAP or publicly supported it. Dipke says his organisational association ended years ago, and AAP also denies any continuing connection. That is their stated position, and a current command structure has not been established. Nevertheless, in this editorial's political reading, AAP is CJP's parent and CJP its ideological offspring. The documented personnel overlap and shared style of political mobilisation make the comparison entirely reasonable, even if formal organisational control remains unproven. That history makes CJP's response to Punjab especially important. An organisation claiming independence must demonstrate that its principles extend beyond attacking the political opponents of its former associates. Democracy Cannot Be Defended Selectively The Supreme Court's Punjab order does not establish criminal guilt against AAP as a party. It does, however, expose serious failures in elections conducted under its state government. The responsibility to explain those failures cannot simply disappear because the governing party belongs to the opposition camp. CJP and AAP cannot credibly demand absolute accountability from the Election Commission and the BJP while treating electoral irregularities in Punjab as a lesser political concern. Nobody is asking CJP to abandon its criticism of the BJP. The demand is far simpler: apply the same standard to everyone. Will Dipke organise protests demanding accountability for Punjab's cancelled elections? Will he ask the AAP government the questions he so readily directs at PM Modi? Will CJP insist that every opposition candidate denied a fair contest receives justice? A movement that raises its voice only when politically convenient risks becoming a campaign against one party rather than a campaign for democracy. Punjab has presented CJP and its political parentage with a defining test. Fifty elections have been set aside by the Supreme Court. The findings are on record, the judicial directions are explicit, and the governing party is AAP. The question is no longer whether electoral malpractice deserves outrage. The question is whether CJP's outrage has a political address.
