A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on Saturday evening, with tremors felt across several parts of north India. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage after the quake. Afghanistan Earthquake Felt Across North India The earthquake occurred at 7.04 pm and struck at a depth of around 215 km beneath the surface. The tremors were reported in parts of north India, prompting residents in some areas to rush out of buildings as a precaution. Initial reports described the quake as moderate to strong, but officials had not confirmed any major structural damage or injuries immediately after the tremors. Further assessments are expected from affected areas in Afghanistan and neighbouring regions. NCS Reports 6.2 Magnitude Quake The National Centre for Seismology reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 6.2, correcting earlier reports that had placed it at 5.7. The quake’s depth reduced the likelihood of severe surface-level destruction, though tremors were widely felt across the region. Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to earthquakes because of its location near the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Hindu Kush region, in particular, frequently records seismic activity. Regional Seismic Activity Raises Concern The earthquake comes amid increased seismic activity in the wider region. Several moderate tremors were also reported in Pakistan’s Balochistan province since Friday, damaging mud houses and injuring a few people in remote areas. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as aftershocks remain possible following strong earthquakes. Disaster response teams in affected areas are expected to assess damage and issue safety advisories if required.
