Sushila Karki Named Nepal’s First Female Prime Minister

Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice of Nepal, was sworn in as interim Prime Minister on 12 September 2025. She became the first woman in the country’s history to lead the government. Her appointment followed weeks of protests over corruption, nepotism, and a nationwide social media ban.

Protests and Political Crisis

The protests, driven largely by youth groups, intensified after restrictions on major social media platforms. Demonstrations turned violent, leading to pressure on Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli, who resigned amid mounting unrest.

Formation of Interim Government

President Ram Chandra Paudel administered Karki’s oath of office. Following her appointment, the House of Representatives was dissolved, and fresh elections were scheduled for March 2026. Karki will serve as caretaker Prime Minister until the new government is formed.

Karki’s Background

Karki previously served as Nepal’s first female Chief Justice from 2016 to 2017. She is regarded as a strong advocate of judicial independence and is widely respected for her integrity.

Challenges Ahead

The interim government faces the task of stabilizing the political climate, restoring public confidence, and addressing the grievances that fueled the protests. Security remains a major concern as the country moves towards elections.
