Surya Kant To Take Oath As 53rd Chief Justice Of India

Justice Surya Kant will be sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Monday, November 24, 2025. His appointment follows the retirement of Chief Justice B. R. Gavai on November 23. The elevation was approved by the President after the central government completed all formal procedures, in keeping with the seniority convention followed by the Supreme Court.

Major Judgments During His Tenure

Justice Kant has been part of several important benches during his time in the Supreme Court. His notable contributions include rulings related to the abrogation of Article 370, matters involving Pegasus spyware allegations, and judicial directions on electoral roll reforms. His work has spanned constitutional law, civil liberties, and administrative issues across multiple high-profile cases.

Expected Priorities As Chief Justice

Justice Kant has earlier indicated that reducing case pendency will be among his top priorities. He has spoken about strengthening judicial efficiency and promoting what he calls “Swadeshi jurisprudence,” a framework aimed at grounding legal reasoning more deeply in Indian constitutional values and domestic precedents.

Significance Of His Tenure

He is expected to serve until February 9, 2027, giving him approximately 15 months in office—longer than several recent CJIs. This extended tenure offers him an opportunity to steer key constitutional matters, oversee institutional reforms and shape the court’s long-term administrative direction.
