Surge in Flights, Panic After US $100K H-1B Fee Rule
The United States has introduced a regulation requiring companies to pay US $100,000 annually for each H-1B visa holder they employ. The rule was announced on September 19, 2025, and will come into effect from midnight U.S. Eastern Time on September 21, 2025.
India Hardest Hit
India, which accounted for about 70–71% of approved H-1B beneficiaries last year, is expected to be hit the hardest. Indian IT companies and industry associations have expressed concern that the fee will severely impact professionals, disrupt families, and create challenges for global operations.
Chaos at Airports and Fare Hike
Following the announcement, airfares from India to the U.S. surged sharply. One-way flights from New Delhi to New York jumped from around ₹37,000 to ₹70,000–80,000. Many Indian tech workers holding H-1B visas rushed to return before the rule takes effect, while companies advised employees abroad not to travel after the deadline.
Legal and Practical Issues Raised
Immigration experts have questioned the legality of the move, pointing out that Congress traditionally sets visa-related fees. Concerns have also been raised about individuals potentially being stranded abroad if they are unable to return before the new rule is enforced.
