Supreme Court to Resume Work on All Saturdays from July 14

Starting July 14, 2025, the Supreme Court of India will restore 2nd and 4th Saturdays as working days, bringing its registry in line with new operational rules aimed at improving efficiency and reducing delays in the justice delivery system. This change comes under the newly notified Supreme Court (Amendment) Rules, 2025, which also define revised office timings and procedures.

Under the updated schedule, the registry will now function on all Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., accepting only urgent filings until 12 noon. This marks a return to the pre-pandemic workweek structure, reflecting the judiciary’s intent to modernize internal operations and increase public accessibility.

Supreme Court Registry Timings

As per the revised rules:

  • Monday to Friday: Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with regular filings accepted only until 4:30 p.m.
  • Saturdays: Registry operational from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; urgent matters only till 12 noon.
  • Special Days & Holidays: Working hours to be notified by the Chief Justice, including during periods like Christmas or New Year.

Operational Reforms

The move to restore Saturday functioning is designed to help ease administrative backlogs and provide litigants with greater flexibility in filing procedures. With case volumes rising and the court under pressure to accelerate hearings, the reinstatement of weekend registry services is seen as a necessary step toward greater responsiveness.

These rules amend Order II, Rules 1 to 3 of the existing Supreme Court framework and reflect a broader strategy of judicial reforms that include digital filing systems, virtual hearings, and improved case tracking mechanisms.

Forward Outlook

The Ministry of Law and Justice will officially publish the full amendment text ahead of implementation. These changes are expected to strengthen the court’s administrative ecosystem and ensure that procedural bottlenecks are addressed through consistent and timely registry access.
