Supreme Court Refuses To Intervene In ‘Jana Nayagan’ Row

The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to intervene in the legal dispute over the delayed release of the Tamil film Jana Nayagan, starring actor Vijay. The makers had approached the apex court after a Madras High Court order affecting the film’s certification process, but the Supreme Court said it would not step in at this stage.

Background Of The Dispute

Jana Nayagan faced a delay in obtaining certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), forcing the producers to postpone the planned release. The Madras High Court initially directed the CBFC to grant a U/A certificate, but a Division Bench stayed that order and set a further hearing for January 20, 2026. The producers then moved the Supreme Court seeking urgent relief.

Supreme Court’s Direction

The Supreme Court refused to entertain the plea, noting that the matter is already before the Madras High Court and should be decided there. The top court asked the high court to proceed with the hearing on the scheduled date. As a result, the film’s release remains uncertain pending the high court’s decision.

Ongoing Certification Process

With certification still unresolved, Jana Nayagan does not yet have final clearance for public release, and industry observers say the uncertainty continues to affect planning and distribution schedules.
