Supreme Court Flags Issues in Delhi Fee Cap Law Rollout
The Supreme Court has raised concerns over the Delhi government’s move to implement the new school fee regulation law in the middle of an academic year. The court said the timing could create confusion and practical difficulties for schools, parents, and authorities.
Court Questions Mid-Year Enforcement
The bench observed that while regulating school fees is a legitimate objective, enforcing the law after the academic session has already begun may not be workable. It noted that the process requires setting up committees and following procedures that may be difficult to complete midway through the year.
Delhi Government Asked to Review Timing
The Supreme Court asked the Delhi government to reconsider whether the law should be implemented immediately or deferred to a later academic session. The court indicated that a delayed rollout could allow smoother implementation and reduce disruption for schools and families.
Background of the Law
The fee regulation law aims to bring transparency to how private schools fix fees and to prevent arbitrary increases. Several private schools have challenged its implementation, arguing that mid-year enforcement could affect their financial planning and administration.
