Supreme Court Directs Immediate Removal of Stray Dogs in Delhi-NCR

The Supreme Court has ordered authorities across Delhi and its neighboring regions—Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad—to begin clearing stray dogs from residential areas immediately. The court described the situation as “extremely grim,” citing rising cases of dog bites and rabies.

Dog Shelters Must Be Ready in Eight Weeks

Civic bodies are instructed to establish shelters within eight weeks that can house thousands of dogs. These facilities must include sterilization and immunization services, staff oversight, and CCTV monitoring. Importantly, the court emphasized that no dog should be released back onto the streets once admitted to the shelter.

Helplines and Reporting Protocols to Be Set Up

Authorities must also launch a helpline within one week to receive reports of dog bite incidents and respond within four hours. Officials must then pick up the reported dog and bring it to the shelter for proper handling and treatment.

No Obstruction Tolerated

The court made it clear that any individual or group attempting to block the process will face strict legal consequences, including contempt orders. The judges stressed that the measures serve the public interest and must override all other considerations.

Why This Matters

With thousands of dog bite cases reported, including among children and the elderly, the move aims to ensure public safety in everyday community spaces. By prioritizing health and security, the court highlights the importance of swift and humane action in managing urban wildlife challenges.
