Supreme Court Declines PIL on IndiGo Crisis
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking its intervention in the recent operational crisis faced by IndiGo airline, marked by large-scale flight cancellations and passenger inconvenience. The court said the matter did not warrant direct intervention at this stage, noting that related issues were already being examined by the Delhi High Court.
A bench of the Supreme Court observed that the petitioner could pursue the matter before the Delhi High Court, where proceedings linked to the airline’s operational disruptions are currently underway. The court accordingly disposed of the petition while granting liberty to the petitioner to join the ongoing proceedings at the High Court level.
Delhi High Court Already Seized of Matter
The Supreme Court made it clear that when a High Court is already dealing with an issue, it is appropriate for the aggrieved party to raise concerns there rather than seeking parallel proceedings before the apex court. The bench stressed the importance of judicial discipline and avoiding duplication of hearings on the same subject.
The petition had raised concerns over passenger safety, accountability, and regulatory oversight following widespread cancellations and delays by the airline.
Regulatory and Legal Scrutiny Continues
The Delhi High Court is currently examining issues related to IndiGo’s operational management, passenger grievances, and the role of aviation regulators. Authorities, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, have already sought explanations from the airline over the disruptions.
The Supreme Court’s order effectively clears the way for the High Court to continue its scrutiny without overlap, while leaving the door open for further legal remedies depending on the outcome of the proceedings.
