Summit at UN Pushes Support for Palestinian Statehood

A high-level summit co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia opened at the United Nations, aiming to revive the long-stalled two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. Leaders attending the UN General Assembly are expected to announce formal recognition of a Palestinian state.

Countries Recognising Palestine

The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal have already recognised Palestine. France and several other countries are preparing to follow, framing the decision as a step to advance peace amid ongoing conflict in Gaza and debates over the West Bank.

Israel, US Oppose Moves

Both Israel and the United States have rejected the recognition push. Israel’s ambassador to the UN dismissed the summit as a “circus,” while Israeli leaders warned that such recognitions could “reward terrorism.” Reports suggest some Israeli officials are considering partial or full annexation of West Bank territories in response.
