Strong Quake Hits Mindanao, Philippines

A massive earthquake struck off the southeastern coast of Mindanao on Friday morning, registering magnitude 7.4 as per both U.S. Geological Survey and Philippine authorities. The epicenter was about 43 km east of Manay in Davao Oriental, at a shallow depth, making the tremors strongly felt across the region.

Casualties and Damage

Officials confirmed at least two deaths in Mati City after buildings and infrastructure were damaged. Schools, a hospital, and transmission lines sustained visible cracks, while widespread power outages were reported. Several homes also suffered partial collapse due to the tremors.

Tsunami Alert and Evacuations

A tsunami warning was initially issued for coastal provinces, prompting residents to move to higher ground. The alert was lifted later in the day after only minor sea level changes were recorded. Authorities have still urged people to remain cautious due to aftershocks.

Response and Outlook

Emergency response teams have been deployed for search, rescue, and rapid assessment of damages. Classes have been suspended in affected areas to allow inspections of public infrastructure. Officials warned that aftershocks are likely and stressed the importance of preparedness in a region that lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”
