Stray Dog Bites Two Foreign Coaches at Delhi Stadium

During training at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi, a stray dog bit two coaches — one from Japan and another from Kenya — on October 3, while the World Para Athletics Championships were underway.

Immediate Medical Response

The coaches were attacked on the warm-up track, prompting immediate medical attention in the stadium’s medical room. They were later shifted to Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment before being returned to their hotels.

Organisers’ Statement

The Organising Committee of the championships issued a statement saying that ahead of the event they had asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to clear stray dogs from the stadium and had stationed vehicles for dog-catching from Day 1. Despite these steps, the committee said, stray animals had reentered the venue, reportedly because people in the nearby area were feeding them.

Wider Context

In recent weeks, the issue of stray dog menace in Delhi has drawn renewed attention. The Supreme Court earlier had modified an earlier directive to move all stray dogs into shelters, instead stating that dogs should be released after vaccination and sterilisation, while those with rabies or aggressive behaviour may be confined. Feeding stray dogs in public places has also been restricted under the court’s ruling.
