Steve Smith Declares Full Fitness Ahead of Second Test Against West Indies
Australian batsman Steve Smith has confirmed that he is fully fit and available for selection ahead of the second Test against the West Indies in Grenada. The veteran cricketer had dislocated the little finger on his right hand during the World Test Championship final but has now made a swift recovery, much to the relief of team management and fans.
After initially wearing a splint and undergoing rehabilitation, Smith recently had his stitches removed and reported no lingering pain or stiffness. He described his current condition as “feeling good” with “a lot of movement now,” which has cleared him for a return to action.
Unconventional Training in New York
In a bid to stay sharp during recovery, Smith undertook an unusual training routine in New York City. He practiced batting under a bridge using a baseball cage, beginning with tennis balls and gradually transitioning to cricket balls. The method helped maintain his timing and reflexes while avoiding strain on the healing finger.
This unorthodox preparation appears to have paid off. Smith later sent footage of his batting sessions to Australia’s support staff, who gave him the green light to rejoin the squad. Upon arrival in Grenada, he was cleared for full practice participation ahead of the Test.
Adjusted Fielding Role Expected
While Smith is expected to slot back into his regular No. 4 batting position, he may take on a less demanding role in the field. Rather than resuming his usual spot in the slips, he is likely to be stationed in positions like mid-on or mid-off to minimize any risk of aggravating the injury.
