Starmer: UK Flag Belongs to All, Not Far-Right
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the national flag should never be surrendered to far-right groups that misuse it to spread division. He made the statement after a massive nationalist rally in London where the St George’s Cross was prominently displayed.
Far-Right Rally in London
The rally, organised by activist Tommy Robinson on 13 September 2025, drew more than 110,000 participants. Violence broke out during the protest, leaving at least 26 police officers injured. Police confirmed around 25 arrests in connection with the unrest.
Starmer’s Stand on National Values
Starmer stressed that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, violence, racial intimidation, and attacks on police cannot be tolerated. He said the national flag stands for unity, diversity, and respect, and should not be allowed to become a symbol of hate.
Government and Police Response
The Metropolitan Police condemned the violence against officers and warned that anyone engaging in criminal acts would be prosecuted. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also vowed strict action, stating that Britain’s democratic values will not be undermined by extremists.
