Starmer Sees India Trade Deal as “Unparalleled Opportunity”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has described the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as an “unparalleled opportunity” during his ongoing visit to India, emphasizing the economic gains he expects for both nations.
Trade Deal Outlook
Starmer said the agreement, signed in July 2025, paves the way for lower tariffs and greater market access. He urged rapid implementation, saying it should become operational “as soon as humanly possible”. His delegation includes business leaders aiming to turn trade commitments into real investments.
Visa Policy Stance
Addressing visa policy concerns, Starmer made it clear that changes in immigration rules will not accompany the trade deal. He said that visa reform is separate from the trade agenda, signaling no concessions on movement of people as part of this pact.
Key Benefits and Sectors
The FTA is expected to reduce duties on goods such as whisky, automobiles, textiles, and medical equipment. Starmer also highlighted opportunities in services, technology, and infrastructure investment. He expressed confidence that Indian markets will welcome increased British exports.
Implementation Challenges
While the deal holds promise, analysts caution that regulatory alignment, customs processes, and protection of domestic producers will be critical. Starmer acknowledged these challenges and reiterated the importance of cooperation between both governments to follow through on the agreement.
