Starlink Nears Approval to Launch Satellite Internet Services in India

Elon Musk’s Starlink is on the verge of receiving authorization to provide satellite internet services in India, having agreed to comply with the government’s stringent security and regulatory requirements. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed that the government is prepared to grant the necessary license once Starlink addresses all specified concerns.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been in discussions with Starlink, emphasizing the importance of adhering to India’s security protocols. The government has sought detailed information regarding the ownership and usage of Starlink devices, especially after instances where such equipment was found in unauthorized possession within the country.

In response, Starlink has committed to meeting the majority of the licensing terms and has pledged to address the government’s security concerns. The company has also requested exemptions from certain provisions, citing technical limitations, and the government is considering these requests to find a mutually agreeable solution.

This development follows the government’s decision to allocate satellite spectrum administratively, aligning with global practices and favoring companies like Starlink. This approach has been welcomed by Starlink but has faced opposition from local telecom operators who advocate for spectrum auctions.

Once all conditions are met, Starlink is expected to commence its satellite internet services in India, aiming to enhance connectivity, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
